Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear

I read Sweet Little Lies by Caz Frear in preparation for heading off to my first book club meeting on Thursday. It’s not generally the kind of book I’d have picked up, but I suppose that’s kind of the point of going to a book club, you end up reading the kinds of books you wouldn’t normally read.

The story follows DS Cat Kinsella and her part in a murder investigation which stirs up memories from her childhood. The story isn’t that fast paced but is full of twists that make you say ‘just one more chapter’ while knowing you’ll be up half the night reading it. I was disappointed with the way the book ended, the final decisions felt like they weren’t true to the character traits demonstrated by Cat all the way through. I suppose the ending is true to human nature but it left me feeling hollow. It was like the author got two-thirds of the way through the book and decided she’d had enough and wanted to end it in the easiest way possible. I started off really liking this book but the further I got into it the more I had the sense that I’d read it before.

I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, a good book and a compelling read but not something I’m likely to read again.
