Crazy Thursday…

Okay, so I got up this morning and did my usual ‘look at my phone and check my social media’ thing. I’d leave my phone downstairs but it doubles as my alarm clock (lame excuse I know but hey, it’s my denial and I’m sticking to it). My Twitter feed is generally full of book bloggers/vloggers, authors, interesting people and so forth. Today my social media feed has been full of one thing, the Stoneman High School shooting. Actually, that’s not technically true, my feeds have been full of people condemning the gun control laws in the US. You may or may not have noticed but Alan tends to avoid ‘getting political’ on his vlog, partly to avoid the inevitable trolls in all honesty. We haven’t had many thankfully and most go away when they aren’t fed. I’m mostly in two minds on the ‘getting political’ thing. Especially in situations like this. As a UK resident, the idea of being surrounded by people armed with guns as you go about your day to me is both insane and terrifying in equal measure. It’s not something we have here. I understand how strongly some Americans feel about their Second Amendment rights but when I hear the often trotted out line of “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” all that comes to mind for me is that, yes, people kill people but you do a lot less damage with weapons that aren’t guns. You can’t kill 6 people in less than a minute with a knife without taking a single step. You don’t hear of massacres being carried out with a baseball bat. I dunno, maybe I’m naive thinking that tighter gun controls, better security when they’re in a home with young people, restrictions on power and ammo would prevent all these horrible tragedies. Thoughts and prayers are well meant and lovely but they don’t fix the problem. As someone on my Twitter feed (@MichaelSkolnik) said “One shoe bomber tried to blow up a plane and now we are forced to take off our shoes. 1606 mass shootings since Sandy Hook Elementary School and Congress has done NOTHING.” Which is both chilling and yet accurate.

So yes, it’s been a bit of a mental day social media wise but other than that my day has been relatively normal.

  1. Hi Michelle, Nice vlog on the Echo spot by Alan. Not sure I’m a fan of all those household smart devices. As a Race I firmly believe we are getting lazier and lazier and being spied upon into the process. I bought the echo dot last year and used it for a few songs now its thrown in the press. The novelty just wore off. We were made to move and improvise. eg. get off the couch to switch on\off the light switch
Just my two cents, Enjoy your vlogs. Tony.
