For Christmas this year, Alan bought me Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend. This is a middle grade book I have had on my Amazon wish list for a while now and he tells me he picked it because he liked the look of the cover. I was so excited to open this on Christmas morning and, by the time I went to bed that night, I’d read over 200 pages. I’m just thankful everyone was coming over Boxing Day for dinner otherwise I would have burned the turkey.
The plot of the story centres around Morrigan Crow, a ten year old cursed child living in the Republic with her politician father and stepmother. In the Republic it is believed that any child born on the first day of the new age is cursed. Essentially anything and everything that goes wrong in the local citizens lives is blamed on Morrigan and her father has to pay restitution for the ‘problems’ caused by Morrigan being cursed. It is also a known fact that all cursed children will die on the last day of the age. Enter Jupiter, who saves Morrigan and steals her away to the Free State to enter into a competition to become a member of the Wunderous Society. Before she can become a member she has to complete and pass four trials. Along the way she makes friends, learns a lot about herself and also learns about the menacing figure known as the Wundersmith, the big bad of the world.
I can honestly say I absolutely loved this book. I was sucked into the world and couldn’t put it down. Before I’d even finished reading it I put the second book into my ‘Christmas Haul’ basket. I’d seen a few people on Booktube talking about this book and thought I’d give it a go and I’m so glad I did. I rated it 5 stars on Goodreads.
