Book Review: WRECKING CREW: Demolishing The Case Against Steven Avery by John Ferak

I bought this audiobook on a whim if I’m honest. I’ve watched both seasons of Making A Murderer and was drawn to this book because Kathleen Zellner was on the cover.

In the spirit of full disclosure I would like to say that I am in neither camp with regard to the innocence or guilt of Steven Avery. I do believe that, based on the evidence shown in Making A Murderer, a new trial for both Steven and Brandon is something that should happen. I also believe that what we’re being shown isn’t everything and that what is being shared in the media needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. All that being said, on with the review…

The book itself is basically a more in depth dive into what was shown on the second season of Making A Murderer. It discusses theories regarding possible alternative suspects and also comes with a slightly more than healthy dose of conspiracy theory. I think I might have been more interested by the content had I not watched season 2 and also, if I had more definitive views on the guilt or innocence of Steven Avery. I was left feeling a little underwhelmed by the book and slightly put off by the conjecture posited by the author. There must be some truth to what he has written though, if not it would be libel and would never have got past the lawyers for the publishers.
